Our View: Diverse ideas must be open to public scrutiny
Wed, 16 Apr 2008 00:00:00 MDT A public library's job is to make books available to the people, not to play parent to its patrons. |

Rep. Bill Sali: Consulates make it easier for illegal immigrants to evade U.S. law
Wed, 16 Apr 2008 00:00:00 MDT The planned opening of a Mexican consulate office in Boise is causing serious concerns for many Idahoans. Other Mexican consulates provide services that help illegal immigrants evade U.S. law and gain access to services at taxpayer expense. Idahoans expect a consulate in our state will do the same. I think they are right. |

Letters to the Editor
Wed, 16 Apr 2008 00:00:00 MDT St. Al's new entrance was built before building-adequate parking was built. If the people in charge can't plan better than that, I wonder are these doctors making engineer decisions or just poor engineers. |

Our View: Everyone must do their part to conserve water

Rod Beck: The AP was wrong to label most Republicans as 'arch-conservative'
Tue, 15 Apr 2008 00:00:00 MDT The Idaho Legislature adjourned April 2, 2008, without passing an issue important to most Idaho Republicans: providing statutory implementation for Idaho Republican rules that prohibit Democrats and other non-Republicans from participation in the selection of Idaho Republican candidates. This issue has been debated and voted on at least three times by the Idaho Republican Party, including the 2006 Idaho Republican Convention, two official meetings of the State Central Committee (the governing body of the Idaho Republican Party), and has been supported each time with large majorities (the last vote was more than 70 percent favorable on the issue.) |

Economic Partnership will fight to ensure the Valley's success
Sat, 19 Apr 2008 00:00:00 MDT If you're keeping score on the number of new companies coming to the Treasure Valley, the scoreboard is looking very good right now. There are Fortune 500 companies currently assessing whether we might offer the right fit for their expansion plans and two new companies recently announced they have already selected the Treasure Valley. Brown Mackie College has selected this area for a career school and WDS Global will be opening a new facility. Combined, those two new companies will add more than 700 jobs to our local economy before the end of the year. Projects like those tend not to make big headlines although combined they offer hundreds of new jobs for our local work force. |

In a nation that reads less and less, The Big Read is a big help
Sat, 19 Apr 2008 00:00:00 MDT Let me set aside "My Antonia" for a moment. Hard to do. Willa Cather's 1918 novel not only is a page-turner, but a great read for anyone who loves the West. who loves the land and its immigrants. loves drama, romance and ineffable beauty. |

Darrel Deide: It's wrong to blame students' failure on lack of pre-K program
Thu, 17 Apr 2008 00:00:00 MDT Recently in this newspaper, a guest opinion appeared chastising the Idaho Legislature for failing to support pre-K education for Idaho's children. The authors cited research supporting such programs and led readers to believe that the state will save money in various ways if a pre-K program is funded. The authors of the opinion said by adding pre-K, we will see lower costs associated with special education and repeated grades and that we will see fewer pregnancies, fewer arrests and increased high school graduation rates and college entrance rates. The authors frequently cited research supporting their cause, and that the majority of Idahoans support pre-K and that a majority of states do as well. |

Letters to the Editor: Sports
Mon, 21 Apr 2008 00:00:00 MDT I was out of town for a week and was shocked to hear upon my return that BSU had dropped Paul J as its football and basketball announcer. Let's face it, Paul J is the voice of the Broncos. A really dumb move by BSU. Then I wondered about his morning show and was relieved to hear that he and Chris Walton will remain a really super team. After listening to Paul J at 6 each morning for 25 years, it wouldn't be worth getting up if he went off the air. |

Owyhee bill shows what can happen when people work together
Sun, 20 Apr 2008 00:00:00 MDT Spring is a time to look forward to in the Owyhee Canyonlands. Melting snowpacks turn the Bruneau, Jarbidge, and Owyhee rivers into some of the wildest, most challenging whitewater rivers in America. The sagebrush plateaus green up and wildflowers add amazing displays of color. Sage grouse start drumming. Bighorn sheep lambs are born in the sheer, rocky canyons. The folks who live in Owyhee County look forward to longer, warmer days as they make a livelihood in one of Idaho's most remote counties. |
