Go do it: Warped Tour
Fri, 08 Aug 2008 00:00:00 MDT Has it really been 14 years? Frighteningly enough, the Warped Tour is now the same age as many of its fans. The tour has evolved over the years, but the overall premise remains the same: Pack a gazillion punk bands, kids, skateboard ramps, marketing strategies and merchandise booths into a parking lot or amphitheater ... and go! The musical lineup has become increasingly diverse - is that really Katy "I Kissed a Girl" Perry on the Warped Tour this year? - so it's definitely an event with wide appeal. You see it in the crowd, which is mostly made up of young MySpacers but almost always also features a few tattooed dads. |

Go do it: Country singer Randy Travis
Fri, 08 Aug 2008 00:00:00 MDT It's tough to claim you don't recognize the voice of Randy Travis. It's distinctive. And with 22 No. 1 songs under his belt, he's infiltrated American culture in a way that few country singers do. Travis, 49, is touring in support of his first country CD in nearly a decade, "Around the Bend." It's not great, not bad, sort of a middle-of-the-road release for a middle-aged guy who still has plenty of vocal tricks up his sleeve. Album sales are sort of an afterthought, anyway. Travis has already racked up 21 million in his career to go along with six Grammys. |

He'll play the Braun Brothers Reunion in Challis on Friday, Aug. 8, (details, page XX) then scoot down to Boise for a headlining gig. It's tough not to like this guy: Country and roots-rock are often equals in his arsenal, and his storytelling abilities are formidable. One of the highlights last year at the Braun Reunion was Keen singing to a raucous crowd, "The road goes on forever and the party never ends." |
