READER'S VIEW: Statesman logic on breaching perplexes

Our view: We must change the way we approach wildfires
Sun, 03 Aug 2008 00:00:00 MDT Many problems grow from government neglect or ineptitude. Not so on the federally managed forests that envelop Warm Lake, Yellow Pine and other pristine Western communities. |
|
Reader's View: All log buildings at Warm Lake should have non-combustible roofs
Sun, 03 Aug 2008 00:00:00 MDT I am the chair of the Warm Lake Fire Protection Committee, a standing committee of the Warm Lake Users' Association, dedicated to all aspects of fire protection. I appreciated your articles on the "Fire Wise?" efforts in Idaho's forests. Our committee advises members of the association on fire wise issues such as proper use of smoke detectors, types and use of fire extinguishers, electrical system inspections, clearance of trees and undergrowth and duff around cabins, ensuring there is safe egress from cabins in case of fire, fire reporting procedures, etc. Our intent is to be a proactive first line of defense against a fire. |

Readers' Views: Reactions to the Statesman's 'fire wise?' series
Sun, 03 Aug 2008 00:00:00 MDT Thank you to Heath Druzin and Rocky Barker for their thought-provoking series on fire management on the national forests of Idaho. Fire managers, resource specialists, elected officials, and the public need to discuss these complicated issues and seek solutions together. There are no simple solutions. But I believe that through dialogue and good science we can come up with innovative and long-term solutions to these dilemmas. |
|
Reader's View: We need more action on all fronts
Sun, 03 Aug 2008 00:00:00 MDT The Idaho Statesman's "Fire Wise?" series ended appropriately with a quote from Forest Service scientist Jack Cohen, "Anything we do we need to do with the idea there is going to be fire." We face a situation that the Andrus Center for Public Policy aptly labels "the paradox of success." Decades-long successful fire suppression in our national forests created thick stands of brush and trees, at the same time the spread of residential development created a burgeoning wildland-urban interface. Climate change effects like earlier fire seasons, hotter summers and drought cycles add to the challenge. |
|
Reader's View: The money used to fight fires is not misspent
Sun, 03 Aug 2008 00:00:00 MDT I read with interest your three-part "Fire Wise?" series on wildfire in Idaho and the efforts to suppress them. You reported the large expense to taxpayers of the personnel, equipment, aerial support, and time spent to fight fires. I will make the following three points to show that the costs are neither excessive nor misspent. |
