Fish rap: Fish headwaters and tributaries for trout
Thu, 31 Jul 2008 00:00:00 MDT You see the upper Salmon River in the top spot, but pretend you don't. It's just a sample of the many great headwaters trout spots. The upper stretches and tributary streams fish great for trout during summer. There are lots of them out there, but I am not going to name names. They're sort of like mountain lakes. Part of the fun is the discovery and the solitude. Head to the high country and check your map. See all those veins of blue across the map? Chances are good there are trout in them. You can make it as hard or easy as you want. Drive to a spot and fish or put on your hiking/wading shoes and wander. You may find a place you've never heard about. You might find a spot you heard had lousy fishing and discover it's brimming with trout. I had that experience last year in a place I won't name, but it's one of the most commonly known river systems in Southwest Idaho. I stopped and fished for a few hours on my way to a more well-known fishing spot and had a blast catching trout. Don't expect trophy-sized fish, but here's the trade-off: You will usually find wild, aggressive (don't you dare call them dumb) trout in beautiful places. You will be exploring rivers and streams that are typically off the radar screen. And if you put even a little effort into it, you may go an entire day or even a weekend without seeing another angler. So fill your tank, hit the backcountry and reap the rewards. |
