Fish rap: Salmon's Middle Fork has good fishing
Thu, 24 Jul 2008 00:00:00 MDT The Middle Fork of the Salmon is best known as a whitewater river that is difficult to get a permit to float. But it's also an outstanding fishing river, and people get the wrong impression that it's inaccessible. It's not. That doesn't mean it's easy, but if you're willing to exert some effort, you will probably be rewarded with some great fishing. There is a hiking trail that runs alongside the Middle Fork, which gives you good foot access. There's also a lot of stream miles upstream from the Boundary Creek boat launch that have good fishing. Throw on some shoes that you can wade in, a pair of quick-drying shorts, toss in a water bottle and food and hit the river. The cutthroat should be plentiful and aggressive. It's all catch-and-release fishing with no bait and single barbless hooks, so make sure you bring the proper tackle. |
