Fish Rap: South Fork of Snake a great float trip
Thu, 17 Jul 2008 00:00:00 MDT I am a little torn between good fishing on local rivers and good fishing on distant rivers. Normally I would favor the local river, especially considering petrol prices. But it's summer, and folks like to take a road trip to their favorite regional fishing spots. I heard a good word out of eastern Idaho, particularly about the South Fork of the Snake River and salmonflies. It's one of the most anticipated hatches on that river all year, and I consider the South Fork canyon the premier overnight fishing float in the state. It's a fun trip for driftboaters, rafters and experienced canoeists. Some folks do it as a long day float, which is possible during the long daylight hours of summer. You get to float through a spectacular canyon and catch cutthroat, rainbows and browns. The Idaho Department of Fish & Game wants you to keep the rainbows to preserve the cutthroat population, so you can have a guilt-free fish fry. It's a classic summer trip worth the drive, even with ludicrous gas prices. |
