Fish Rap: Hells Canyon reservoirs are fishing great
Thu, 19 Jun 2008 00:00:00 MDT There are few places you can catch a chinook salmon and a crappie, but Hells Canyon is one of them. The reservoirs are fishing great from top to bottom. You're not going to catch a chinook in Brownlee, but you can below Hells Canyon Dam. You could load up a few rods and spend a weekend catching a variety of fish. Between Woodhead Park and Hells Canyon Dam, you have about 30 miles of easily accessible water where you can catch bass, crappie, trout, catfish and more. The salmon are arriving at the trap below Hells Canyon Dam, and you can catch those too. There are a few other reasons why this area gets the top spot this week. All three reservoirs are full, and the weather looks warm and stable, which usually means great fishing. Temperatures are likely to hit the low 90s this weekend, but nights will be cool, which makes great camping weather. It's as close to guaranteed good fishing and camping as you're going to find. If you're a fan of the reservoirs, chances are good you've already been there this year. If you haven't been there yet, it's time to dig the dimes out of the ashtray and quarters from under the couch cushions, gas up and head down there. You should be able to come home with a mess of fish fillets. But check the regulations because they differ among the different reservoirs. You might want to get a license for Oregon so you can go wherever the fish are biting. |
