Go do it: Rush at the Idaho Center
Fri, 30 May 2008 00:00:00 MDT To fans of progressive and classic rock, it's difficult to overstate the significance of consummate power trio Rush, which hasn't visited the Treasure Valley in more than a decade: The inspired song arrangements, the lock-step instrumental proficiency, the lost art of the imaginative, face-melting drum solo. Diehard fans of the Canadian act already will be up to snuff on the group's setlist for its "Snakes & Arrows Tour." (A live double-CD documenting the 2007 leg was released in April.) Let's put it this way: Even casual Rush fans should be thrilled with the group's mix of unforgettable riffs ("Red Barchetta," "Tom Sawyer") and modern creativity. Simply put, they just don't make bands like Rush anymore. |

Go do it: Leann Rimes leads outdoor concert series
Fri, 30 May 2008 00:00:00 MDT LeAnn Rimes' classic, beautiful voice will kick off the "Outlaw Field Summer Concert Series" at the Idaho Botanical Garden. It's easy to think of Rimes as that little girl with the huge lungs. "Blue," her first single, catapulted her to fame when she was just 13 years old. Or maybe your sense of time is distorted in the opposite way, and you now envision Rimes as sort of "mature" by now. In reality, she's the same age as current country-pop sensation Carrie Underwood but with a long, successful career already under her belt. Nowadays, Rimes has found a niche as a mid-level country star - she's been opening for Kenny Chesney on his latest stadium tour - and shows no signs of slowing. Rimes' latest album, "Family," which is based on her life, showcases a confident, versatile young woman who is comfortable in her own skin. And, man, can she sing. |

Fish Rap: Silver Creek off to a solid start for trout
Thu, 29 May 2008 00:00:00 MDT Silver Creek fishing well is not particularly surprising. The creek is loaded with trout, and they have had a few months to forget what steel tastes like. But what might surprise you is good bug hatches are occurring, and the trout don't seem all that picky. I talked with the guys at Silver Creek Outfitters and they said the creek wasn't that crowded for the opener, and lots of people were heading back to their campers during the frequent rain storms. Those who fished were catching trout on PMDs, baetis and callibaetis. They were also getting fish on beetles, damsel nymphs, green drake nymphs, and a few other things. That sounds to me like hungry fish that aren't all that picky, which is the opposite of what you would normally expect from Silver Creek's trout. And to make the creek even more attractive, the famed brown drake hatch could start next week. The reason people get so excited about brown drakes is they make Silver Creek's trout behave like starving planters. The creek is flowing at its usual clear, slow flows, unlike most rivers that are swollen with snowmelt and probably unfishable for at least a couple more weeks. But one final word of caution: Unless you know the creek pretty well, don't go there expecting to autoload fish. Go there to experience one of Idaho's most famous fly fishing spots, catch a few fish and savor the whole thing. Even with stupid-high gas prices, it's worth the trip. |
