Movie review: 'Honeydripper'
Fri, 16 May 2008 00:00:00 MDT Filmmaker John Sayles has always moved adroitly among subjects, including, more often than not, politically or culturally charged issues, from the lives of the striking 1920s coal workers in "Matewan" to the march of development in a modern Florida town in "Sunshine State" and race relations in "Lone Star's" border town. Since the early '80s, the penetrating intelligence of his writing has been matched only by his sense of authenticity. |

'Indiana Jones' set features Spielberg, Lucas intros
Fri, 16 May 2008 00:00:00 MDT Professor Henry Jones Jr. is offering a refresher course on his past achievements before you join the throng to see his latest, "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," which hits theaters May 22. The first three flicks starring Harrison Ford as the archaeologist with the outlaw attitude - "Raiders of the Lost Ark," "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" and "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" - arrive in new DVD versions separately and in the three-disc "Indiana Jones: The Adventure Collection." Each film comes with an introduction by director Steven Spielberg and producer George Lucas (Spielberg confides that he wasn't too enthusiastic over Lucas' Holy Grail idea for "Last Crusade," while both discuss Spielberg's notion of making it a father-son reconciliation between Harrison Ford's Indy and Sean Connery's Henry Jones Sr. They also address the critical drubbing received by "Temple of Doom."). Other extras include segments on the melting-face effects in "Raiders" and the snakes, rats and bugs that gave the films their "ick" factor, plus a session with the women in Indy's life, Karen Allen, Kate Capshaw and Alison Doody. "Adventure Collection" DVD set, $49.99; single DVDs, $26.99 each. (Paramount) |

The Bikes and Rec Alleycat race
Fri, 16 May 2008 00:00:00 MDT The folks who brought you last year's Pedal and Paddle ride and river float are at it again with the Bikes and Rec Alleycat race on Saturday, May 17, in Boise. An alleycat race, for the unfamiliar, involves racers - usually on fixed-gear bikes but not limited to - riding from checkpoint to checkpoint, not unlike a scavenger hunt on two wheels or an afternoon in the life of a bike messenger, but with the added thrill of competition (a better, more detailed description exists at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alleycat_races). The event is expected to draw competitive cyclists, curious newbies and self-described "bike freaks" who aren't in it to win but just like riding bikes and celebrating Boise's cycling culture. Organizer Bart Kline said the alleycat is "less of a race and more of an expression of the impact that bikes and bike riding can have on mobility and enlightenment." If you think that's some sort of Eastern thing, far from it: The free beer after the event (21 and older with ID) speaks for itself. If that's not enough of an enticement, a host of sponsors have ponied up prizes to give away in a post-ride drawing. |
